After every 4 years of working at TidepoolAt Tidepool, we value our team members' well-being and personal growth. After four years of service, full-time employees and full-time contractors are encouraged to take 4 weeks of a four-week paid sabbatical.

During this sabbatical, you should work on passion projects -something outside the scope of your normal work that is interesting and exciting to you. This could be researching a topic of interest, volunteering for another nonprofit, or something else altogether.

The sabbatical should be a time of self-improvement and exploration with a central activity or theme. At the end of the sabbatical, you should put together a presentation about your sabbatical and present it to the team.

The sabbatical is meant to help further our core value of improvement by letting the employees explore and learn about another area of interest. It may also help some employees avoid burnout from working on one thing for too long. This time is meant for activities outside your normal work scope, helping you recharge and providing a clear separation from work responsibilities. This policy aims to promote team wellness and lifelong learning, allowing you to explore new interests and engage in self-care.

We urge you to use this time for whatever will best rejuvenate you. Your sabbatical could involve travel, learning a new skill, focussing on home improvements, volunteering, or any other pursuit. Upon your return, you're welcome to share your experiences with the team (e.g. as a presentation, photo essay, or narrative), potentially inspiring others, though this is entirely optional.

To minimize disruption to our operations and colleagues, please plan your sabbatical at least six months in advance.

It's important to note that sabbatical time doesn't accrue, and we expect Tidepoolers to return to work afterward. This policy is not intended as a means of leaving the company. Instead, it's an opportunity to refresh and return with new perspectives and energy.

Remember, the goal is for you to return recharged and ready to contribute your best to our team and mission.

Note

To make sure that sabbatical is not overly disruptive to the team, you should plan the time for your sabbatical at minimum, 6 months in advance.

The expectation is that after a sabbatical the employee returns to work. A sabbatical is not to be used as a soft exit from the company.
