User account relationships

People with diabetes own their data in Tidepool.

End-users may create a personal, non-custodial account at home. They may choose to share their data and invite another user to view their data and, if granted, permission to upload data to their account. They may choose to share their data with a Clinic account, granting view permission to all Clinic team members. They may also grant upload permissions to all Clinic account team members.

Clinicians have the ability to create custodial accounts on behalf of their patients, connecting them to that Clinician’s Clinic account. Every Clinic team member is then automatically given view and upload permission to that custodial account.

Clinicians may optionally include an email address for the patient within a custodial account, which triggers an email with a secure account verification link to be generated and sent to the patient automatically, offering the opportunity for the patient to claim that account.

Once a custodial has been claimed, the patient (end-user) retains full ownership of the account and all sharing permissions.

Sharing permissions

When an end user chooses to share their data, they can invite another user or Clinic to view their data and optionally allow them to upload data on their behalf.
